About Mumbai University Distance Education
The University of Mumbai was established in 1857, after Wood’s Dispatch. This University is also known as Mumbai University. Back then, this University was known as the University of Bombay, but later the name of the university changed after the city name changed from Bombay to Mumbai. The University has been accredited with NAAC (National Assessment & Accreditation Council) A ++ Grade.
The University is now known to offer knowledge through attracting talent, excellent teaching, research, innovation, and fostering creativity. With the mission to provide a conducive & free atmosphere to enhance and encourage creative thinking, and impart in-depth disciplinary knowledge to make future problem solvers, leaders & entrepreneurs. It has been ranked 71st by NIRF(National Institutional Ranking Framework).
The University Campus is equipped with all the basic to essential facilities such as Knowledge Resouce Centre, Gym Khana, Hostels, Guest House, Cafeteria, Sports Complex, Virtual lecture halls and classrooms, Campus Regions, and University Health Care Centre. Their top Alumni are Dr. B R Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Dadajibhai Naoroji, Pherozeshah Mehta, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, Dr. Homi Bhabha, MC Chagla, Jamsetji Tata, Anil Kakodhar, Azim Premji, Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Gavaskar, Raghunath Mashelkar, and many more.
The correspondence courses (distance mode of learning) were offered in 1970-1971, as the Directorate of Correspondance Courses, and in 1993, this department was renamed as Institute of Distance Education. They started offering various courses in the study field of arts, science, IT, and many more. The university offers more than 34 study programs in distance mode and along with it, provides study material, audio-video cassettes, and PCP Centres(Guidance Lectures/ Practicals). It has 17+ admission centers, 36000+ books in the library, and many regional centers as well.
With the aim to offer quality education to everyone around the country, the university started offering courses not just in regular mode, but in distance learning mode, which helped him to gain in-depth knowledge and a research-oriented approach to initiate the ideas. The University is ranked 751st by QS World University Rankings. It is also positioned at 1201 by Times Higher Education
