How is the CAT Score Equated?

CAT exam is conducted in multiple sessions, to level up the difficulty of all the sessions, a scaling method is used by institutions mainly IIMs. This is done using the normalization process and the score obtained after this is called the scaled score or equated score. Thus, to ensure a fair evaluation process in the CAT exam for candidates appearing for the exam at different timings, this procedure of equating CAT scores is followed.

What is Meant by Percentile?

Percentile is a relative value that indicates the performance of a particular candidate to others who appeared for the CAT exam. For example, if a candidate scores 98 percentile in the CAT, it means that this candidate performed 98% times better than the other candidates who appeared for the exam or 2% of candidates scored better than this candidate in the CAT exam.

Formula Used to Calculate CAT Percentile

The calculation of percentile is based on the total number of candidates who appeared for the CAT exam. There are a variety of formulas used for calculating percentiles based on different factors. One of them is provided here which uses your rank and total number of candidates in the CAT exam.

The formula for percentile is as follows: CAT Percentile= [1- (Respective Rank in CAT exam/ Total no. of CAT candidates)] * 100

Example: Suppose a candidate “XYZ” obtains a rank of 3400 amongst the total of 3,30,000 candidates who appeared for the CAT exam.

The percentile of the candidate “XYZ” can be calculated as:

CAT Percentile = [1- (3400/ 3,30,000)] * 100 = 98.96
